Failté or Welcome to the website for the Isle of Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club!

Charlie Kirkpatrick Trio

Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club’s compere for their February meeting, Jim Campbell, was delighted to welcome a good turnout of music enthusiasts to the Royal Hotel, Portree for an evening of great music and more than a little hilarity which kicked off with great duets from Emily Matheson on piano accordion accompanied on keyboard by Derek Hamilton who had been hijacked from the guest band! Derek remained in situ to accompany accordionist Chiara MacLean and, later in the programme fiddler Julia Rudram. Solo fiddlers Kathleen MacDonald, Wendy Riva and Rachel Henderson each contributed some great sets to complete the music from the Club’s own players. Special guests for the evening were no strangers to the Skye Club and making a welcome return it was The Charlie Kirkpatrick Trio with Charlie leading on his familiar black Hohner Shand Morino, Derek Hamilton of Galson on keyboard and Richard Hughes of Tobermory on drums. With Charlie’s lineage connection to the Isle of Iona and his marriage to a Skye girl it was no surprise that the band’s musical programme had a strong west coast flavour, much appreciated by the local audience as the jigs, marches, reels, waltzes and more filled the function room. As usual, Charlie had several entertaining anecdotes, some of which might even have been true and Derek exercised his vocal chords with his version of “The Auld Meal Mill”. The night of top class entertainment from those three fine musicians passed all to quickly and closed in traditional fashion with “Kate Dalrymple”. Next meeting of the Club will be Thursday 7th March in the Royal Hotel, Portree when the special guests will be The Gillian Stevenson Band.
