Roy Hendrie Duo

October saw the start of the 2018/19 season of monthly sessions of traditional Scottish music by Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club in the usual venue of the Royal Hotel, Portree on the first Thursday of the month. Club chairperson Julia Rudram took on the role of compere and invited several Club players to get the music underway. First on stage was talented accordionist Emily Matheson who played several sets to get audience feet tapping, she was followed by eight year old fiddler Tilly Ng with several solo sets which she finished appropriately with Kate Dalrymple. Compere Julia laid her mic aside, picked up her fiddle and continued the entertainment. Final local musician and Club stalwart was fine fiddler Wendy Riva who included in her solo set Scotland the Brave and closed with the dramatic traditional Hungarian folk dance Czardas. Time then for the special guest band for the evening who were the Roy Hendrie Duo. Based in Troon, Roy is a noted bandleader, broadcaster and former U.K. accordion champion and he was accompanied by tremendous fiddler and guitarist Dave Morrice from Aberdeen. The Duo launched into an amazingly varied programme, displaying their mastery of their respective instruments with tremendous arrangements and making the appreciative audience wonder what was next? From traditional marches, Helen Black of Inveran: Mrs H L MacDonald of Dunach: The Cotton Patch Rag: Continental Waltz ; Shetland two Step…and so the music flowed on until all too soon it was time to close the evening with a terrific set of Shetland reels. Musicianship at its best thanks to a fine duo who made a big impression at the Club. Next month on Thursday 1st November we look forward to an evening of great music from The Ewan Galloway Band in Portree’s Royal Hotel.
