Andrew MacDonald Trio

Storm Caroline failed to disrupt the December meeting of Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club when a surprising number of enthusiasts braved the wintry weather to assemble in their usual venue of Portree’s Royal Hotel intent on enjoying an evening of fine music. M.C. Jim Campbell invited local musicians to take the stage and first to entertain were accordionist Emily Matheson with drummer Donald John Campbell who included among the sets a wonderful Swedish slow air. Two of the youngest Club players, fiddlers Tilly Ng and Anna MacDonald played solos and Anna played Jingle Bells which had the audience singing along. The girls tutor, Laura Harrington who is shortly to move away from Skye, hijacked guest bandleader Andrew MacDonald to accompany her on piano and gave a superb selection of waltzes, polkas and a lively Cajun number. Then it was the turn of regular fiddler Julia Rudram to contribute to the music and the audience were delighted to see that she was accompanied on guitar by George Baker. A frequent and always welcome visitor to the Club, accordionist Janet Graham of Cumbernauld was next on stage accompanied by Andrew MacDonald on piano and Hugh McCallum on drums for some great sets played in her familiar relaxed style. Final local players of the evening were sisters Elsa and Jocelyn Galbraith, with Elsa on cello and Jocelyn on accordion. Excellent playing from both with each playing a solo and finishing with a duet. The remainder of the evening was taken up by a superb programme from the Club’s guest band, The Andrew MacDonald Trio. Andrew, of Inverlochy but now resident in Oban, led on piano accordion, with Robert Nairn of Kentra on fiddle and Hugh McCallum of Fort William. As only to be expected from this Trio their programme was mainly west coast themed played to the highest standard which delighted the local audience and kept the toes tapping all night. The evening finished with a traditional “stramash” and left the audience to look forward to their next meeting on 4th January 2018 with guests, The Islands Ceilidh Band.
